What is Oniomania? Understanding Compulsive Shopping

June 24, 20265 min read

Oniomania (from the Greek onios, "for sale", and mania, "insanity") is the clinical term used to describe compulsive buying disorder. It is a serious psychological condition where an individual feels an uncontrollable and repetitive urge to shop, even when they do not have the financial resources or a real need for the products.

Main Symptoms

Often, the line between an "avid shopper" and a compulsive buyer is thin, but oniomania presents distinct characteristics:

  • A feeling of euphoria or intense relief at the moment of purchase.
  • Strong feelings of guilt, shame, or regret immediately after the act.
  • Hiding purchases or receipts from family members and friends.
  • Shopping as a primary way to cope with stress, sadness, or anxiety.
  • Progressive debt and inability to stop, even when facing severe financial consequences.

The Cycle of Compulsion

Shopping compulsion works similarly to other addictions (such as gambling). The brain releases large amounts of dopamine during the anticipation of the purchase — that is, while browsing online window shops and placing items in the cart. It is the hunt, not the product itself, that brings satisfaction.

How to Treat

Treatment typically involves Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps the patient identify the emotional triggers that lead them to shop.

Harm reduction tools can also be effective. This is where Simulated Retail Therapy comes in. Using simulators (such as DopamineShop) allows the brain to experience the shopping journey and release the desired dopamine, but blocks the final step of spending real money, helping control anxiety without causing debt.
